Where's my slave drive?

I have a backup hard drive and it was showing in Windows Explorer but when I rebooted my computer after installing a program, the drive disappeared. How can I get it back without opening up the computer?

Reboot the computer. The first thing you will hear the POST beep then the BIOS, the memory count and any installed hard drives and CD/DVD drives will ID in the monitor. Was your second drive listed?

NO? Then open the case and check the two cables going to the drive and their connection to the motherboard. All modern (computers 2 or 3 years old) no longer have a disk setup so you won't find an Auto-Detect function. But if yours is older.

    THEN

During the boot process look at the bottom of the monitor screen. You will see a few things like "<F2> or <ESC> or <DEL> to enter BIOS Press that KEY. Chances are you will miss it the first time and it will load Windows. Just reboot and press the key again right after the POST beep.

CAUTION fooling around in BIOS can really cause problems so be careful. As suggested goto Standard CMOS to see if your drive is listed. Again, in newer computers there is no Auto-detect function but if there is do it. (No mouse in BIOS just the arrow keys) Anyway, if you disk is not listed you really need to open it up and check the two cables going to the drive. If you did find an auto-detect function and managed to get the drive listed then press F10 to save.

restart your computer and open up BIOS, go to standard CMOS options, and there should be a list of IDE connections. try auto detection to see if your computer can find your missing drive. if it can't, you should probably try opening the case and see if something is loose, I had that same problem today.
