What is the equation for happiness ?

A friend of mine says that it is equal to achievement over expectation, but I say it is in being grateful for what you have i. e., Have an "Attitude of Gratitude". What do you say it is?

Aristotle says in the Nicomachean Ethics that happiness is the ultimate end that all actions of people are directed towards. Yes, many people have a false conception of happiness, such as pleasure or money, but both of those examples are not ends in themselves. Money is used to buy something else that will hopefully make the buyer "happier". Pleasure is only temporary, but true happiness, according to Aristotle, is lasting and an end in itself. So, back to your question, how may one get there? Aristotle says that it is leading the "good life". Aristotle describes the "good life" for humans as one in which they carry out their characteristic activity, for humans it is being "rational animals", in other words, "a life of contemplation" as Plato would call it in his Republic.

Yes, an attitude of gratitude certainly works in my life. But it is joy and bliss that we really seek, ever new joy, happiness has it's opposite sadness, if you want off the roller coaster completely, then just don't have any preference in life, and watch the ups and downs most people experience, but don't be involved in the drama...I think giving thanks in everything says the same thing...I was thankful even when I got sick, and knew that the solution to healing would come, and people started appearing in my life, telling me what to do, and I did it, and I thank again, that I am well...what was wrong with me, was a supposed "incurable" problem, to people that don't know how the attitude of gratitude works in your favor.

I would say that the equation for happiness (in my perspective) is to be grateful for the things and people in your life. Appreciate them for what they are, appreciate the world for what it is. Acknowledging the flaws of these things and people and embrace them, appreciate the fact that they are what creates a unique entity. Do the same for yourself, acknowledge and embrace your own flaws.
