Depression Medication?
Hi, I have not been to the doctors yet, but I am pretty sure I have depression, possibly seasonal depression. It is effecting much of my day to day life, and is something that I would really like to get taken care of, so I can pick myself up and move on. We are planning to have a baby in the next 2 years, and I am not sure that going on depression medication is the best thing, because I am worried about it being in my system, even if I go off of it to get pregnant eventually. I am just totally unsure of what to do in this situation, will depression medication really make a difference? I am so embarrassed to go to my doctor and tell him that I think I am in need of medication because I have psychological issues that I know I can't control. Looking for some guidance here...? Is there anything natural that I can take or do? We are getting a dog in June for something to help us through this time, and I would like to get out and enjoy things more, but am finding it difficult.

There are different types of depression, clinical and situational are the main ones. Situational can be helped through counseling while clinical requires medicine because of a chemical imbalance in the brain. For clinical depression that is anything but mild you will need a prescription. For me, with the right medicines I’m good but without I can’t function.
What you really need to do is find a counselor that specializes in depression and get a diagnoses. It is unlikely that you family doctor knows enough about depression to have any reliable information for you. There have been many new discoveries in the last 10 years and you need someone who's job it is to stay up on them. Even though counselors can't prescribe drugs they should have an idea as to whether or not it would be a problem in pregnancy.
Also you simply must get past the idea that depression is something to be embarrassed about. It is usually clinical and totally beyond you control. We all go to the doctor to be treated for other illnesses why not depression?
So get some information from someone who knows about depression and find a good counselor. A good place to start would be to do some reading on the subject from a good source. I would recommend this source. I think it would be worth it to get you life back.
By the way, I am 54 and have clinical depression for about 7 years. It is hereditary so my dad has it as did his mom. Also one of my daughters has it. By being on medicine we all live normal lives. If we go off of it we end up back in that dark dispare.
I wish you well.

Personally, I'd be wary of it. You don't know what exactly trace amounts of medicine can do, and I suggest you ask your doctor about this if you are planning on getting pregnant. Don't be silly, that's what doctors are there for. Don't tell him you need medication, tell him you are depressed! Then say that you are planning on getting pregnant, and let him put two and two together.
Honestly, you don't need meds. Therapy is a wonderful thing! It might even be more effective. And don't feel weird about that either, everyone needs to see one. If anything, ask your doctor to refer you to a good therapist. A psychiatrist is the only person who can really tell you what you have, and it is best to discuss your symptoms/concerns with him/her.
1.) Eat Healthy Foods, try organic, go vegetarian. Geek out, and learn to cook from a vegan cook book.
2.) Exercise Regularly, if this means just running around the block a few times in the morning, then go for it, but keep it consistent, and if you can, find someone to exercise with (the puppy is a likely candidate).
3.) Get 8+ hours of sleep every night--- yes, even on weekends. As a matter of fact, make yourself a sleep schedual, set an early alarm clock, even if you don't have any reason to get up early, just because the early to rise tend to get to bed earlier. If you have trouble sleeping, try melatonin, as it is naturally produced by your body, but some people produce less than others, and this causes insomnia.
4.) Only allow yourself an hour or two on the computer/tv each day. Get out, walk places, talk to your friends.
5.) Try therapy, seriously, this is the best way to get your concerns taken care of!
6.) Talk things out with your partner.
7.) Find a hobby!
I hope this helps, and the best of luck you you. :)

There is nothing to feel embarrassedabout. There is a huge amount of people who suffer depression. It's ok, it's the same as having other illnesses and you need medication to help your body work correctly.
Some meds work great. It took me a while to find the right one for me (cymbalta) but I am pretty happy. My Dr. says it's safe to use it while pregnant btw. However, you might be running before learning to walk, meaning that you need to get evaluated by a professional.
As for something natural, acupuncture is wonderful, even for acute cases. Reiki is great as well. You could try these before trying drugs.
Please don't let your shame get in the way of a happy life.
Good luck.

First ask yourself , what it is that triggers depression in you . We all have a trigger . Certain events, people , even seasons trigger bouts of depression.
Don't be embarrased to seek help. You are among millions. It is NOT a weakness. It is a real sickness.
I lived with depression for years until it brought me down so low that I had problems picking myself up. it affected my work, play, everything. I got so hard to live with that my wife left me about 6 years ago.
Do something about it NOW. Don't wait. Even talking about it begins to help you . Choose your Doctor . One that you can really trust.

You must do the following because Depression and anxiety is directly related to the liver and brain . This connection is the key.
How is your digestive system. I can bet it must be imbalanced. What you do is that in dinner you stop taking rice and bread.
At night you soak a fig in half glass of water overnight and eat it and drink the water , first thing in the morning.
During the day, at least twice you take half to full glass of water and mix half lime in it and add 2 to 3 pinches of black pepper and drink it.
Also, buy Turmeric Powder and boil 1/3rd to half tsp of this in half to full glass of milk, and drink that milk once a day.
In 15 days you will is marked improvement .

P.S. Always watch the color of your stools. If its black and gray continue the advise above till its color changes to yellowish brown, as it should be. This is very important.
