93 escort has broken timing belt,does anyone know if it damaged the valves?

We have a 93 escort that broke the timing belt,was wondering if anyone know's if it could damage the valve train when it broke?.

Update:

The engine is a 1.9 liter.

    Sure will. If the engine was running when it broke then odds are it did. You know for certain until you run some tests or preferably disassemble it. Not much sense in installing a new belt to do a comp or leak down tests. If it were mine or a customers I would open it up and look.
