How can there by a bandwagon for Lebron, when being a fan of him is decidedly unpopular?

Somewhat improper use of the word isn't it? wouldn't rebel, nonconformist or dissident be more fitting?

And, what are Kobe fans? According to popular opinion, they're not bandwagoners, even though it is the popular and the glorious thing to do. Without the bandwagons, what reason is there to be a Kobe fan, and not also a Lebron fan? (that is if you don't actually live in the LA area)

Isn't it possible to be a Lebron fan, and a Kobe fan at the same time? Would your bandwagons cancel one another out, or are you a double bandwagoner?

Or is bandwagon just an overused word that doesn't really have any meaning anymore?

Update:

@ the masters black - Yeah well I uh.....I think a lot of people were surprised by what the Celtics were able to do. If you look through my history of answers, you'll see that I'm an NBA fan in general, but primarily a Celtics fan.

It is true that I strongly suspected Cleveland would win it last year, however I was thrilled that the Celtics were able to beat them. I'm still amazed that they actually did it.

I think maybe the word bandwagon has changed along with updates to technology. The term bandwagon was coined in the USA in the mid 19th century, simply as the name for the wagon that carried a circus band. Now with the use of planes, semi's and really nice buses, being on a wagon seems like a pretty lousy option.

A more serious answer to your questions is that "jumping on a bandwagon" means joining a growing movement in support of someone or something, often in an opportunist way, when that movement is seen to have become successful. In that way people can certainly join a bandwagon though it continues to be unpopular. And yes you can be on a Lebron bandwagon and a Kobe bandwagon at the same time, all the way up until the finals when one stops being successful. Then put on your heat jersey and start denouncing the LA loser...remember, you've always been a Miami fan, even though you've never been , don't speak spanish, and have no idea weather its on the ocean or the gulf.

Loyalty - LeBron fans will stick with him until the day he retires, whether he gets 20 rings or 0 rings. Just ask the user named Kibby.

Bandwagonners like the Heat because the Heat are winning.

LeBron fans like the Heat because they are loyal to LeBron.
