A lot of the symptoms of AMS (acute mountain sickness) can be alleviated just be drinking plenty of water and avoiding alcohol and caffeine. Most symptoms will subside on their own in a few days. More importantly you should pay attention to these symptoms: a wet cough with pink sputum can be a sign of HAPE (high altitude pulmonary edema.) A severe headache combined with dizziness, or altered level of consciousness, can be a sign of HACE (high altitude cerebral edema.) Both HACE and HAPE are serious, life threatening conditions, and should be treated with immediate evacuation to lower elevation, and hospital treatment.
