Why do they call them Field Goals?

Why not shots attempted? What do field goals have to do with basketball?

They are goals made from the field of play. Just like football. It's truly called the PAT, point after try, but it is also a score made from the field of play. Technically, goals in soccer are field goals too. It's just saying it's a goal from the field of play.

Well , i think that when the coaches use a timeout they have a better chance of planning out the defense because i remember when the giants called a timeout last year and blocked the field goal.So it gets the kicker more anxious and in some cases allows the other team to develop a strategy.
