Why are Christians so hard on people who don't believe as they do?

and why do they try with all their might to convert people who would rather be left unto themselves?

I'm asking because I truly want to know.

Update:

I SHOULD have phrased it as SOME Christians. I apologize to those who actually ARE tolerant of others' beliefs.

This especially applies to christians who :

    a) believe every word of the bible is literally true including a literal belief in hell.

    b) are young in the faith, so young that they are full of energy and opinion and low on tact or self control.

To put yourself in the mind of these christians that are so annoying consider this analogy:

You have a loved one who is on a path that is inherently self destructive, you love them and want them to live and be happy but you know the path they have chosen for themselves (let's make it more realistic say they are taking highly addictive drugs and sharing needles with their friends, or let's say they're long term alcoholics who have been told by their doctor that they are on the road to liver failure but you see them continue drinking, or maybe they have a gambling addition that is financially ruining them and they are on the verge of being evicted from their home and destroying their family's security) would you not do everything you can to help them? Would you callously leave them to their problem or would you help.

In the minds of these young extremely zealous and usually fundamentalist christians they love you very much and want to save you from a fate far worse than death - eternal punishment in hellfire. Because they believe their views on the afterlife are absolutely correct to them it logically and necessarily follows that all other views are not only wrong but dangerous.

Hopefully now you understand better what they're thinking when they pester you about going to church. They don't want to be a nuisance they don't want to alienate you and they are cognisant of the risks of losing your friendship or even incurring your wrath but they believe what they are doing is important and their concern for your welfare is so great that they are willing to risk all that for the sake of giving you the opportunity to have a happy life on earth and eternal happiness in heaven.

I don't have enough patience with illogical people. Im sorry if that sounds like an attack on a person, its not. Its an attack on illogical thought that usually promotes anger and strife.

I have never tried to convert anyone in my life. Its not that I don't care its just that I do not feel I can be responsible for anothers bad decision. I present a logical answer when asked a question and leave the rest up to them like I am doing with you right now.

Some christians are convinced that God should be feared more than loved. They take themselves way too seriously.

The majority of them really care about you and want you to know God too, just under an exaggerated doctrine. God is not that hard..

I wouldn't say Christians were hard on people. We try tell people about God because that's what happens when you become a christian you get this desire to tell people about God.

I'm a Christian but I realize that God isn't drawing everyone to Christ. My brethren have a tendency to believe that "God loves everybody", and He said He didn't. So they try hard because they think that deep down, EVERYONE wants to be a Christian! And I don't hold that view.

Because the church teaches them to be judgemental. This site is overun by Christians that make judjement against anyone that does not follow their rules.
