What beliefs do we have that other cultures would call barbaric?

I was just talking about a 'barbaric' aspect of another culture, specifically the old practice of infanticide when a female child was born by cultures that favored male children to pass on family names, and it got me thinking what aspects of our culture might others look at as barbaric? I would be even more interested in hearing a good 'devils advocate' argument for why the accepted practice you listed could be considered barbaric to others.

Lets exclude anything that some would consider controversial or often argued about in todays society, as well as practices which aren't at least somewhat mainstream. So abortion and portions of the LBGT community/issues are out, as our current culture cant agree on them (plus I'm already offering up enough flame bait without puring gasoline on the topic). However, the amount of sex/premarital sex we have is in because while frowned upon it is (compared to many cultures of the past) fairly common and far more openly done according to national statistics. Keep in mind I'm looking for an example of how others could look negatively on your own culture, not issues you have with another's culture.

I'll even start with an example, birth rates. Here in the US we encourage pregnancy and birth and have nothing against a family having four or more children. In a world that is heavily populated and straining to provide resources for those already living on it a strong argument could be made that it is irresponsible to knowingly choose to have half a dozen children that will further strain the earth's ecosystems. It could be called short sited, selfish (the prosperous countries having more children and thus 'hogging' more of the worlds limited resources) and harmful to the children (who will have to be raised in an even more populated and stressed world then the one we already live in).

Eating cow. In India, cows are seen as sacred, and anyone would see the slaughtering of so many cows as absolutely barbaric. In a way this makes a lot of sense. Cows provide milk and other dairy based products for their entire lives; killing them to enjoy their meat once is simply wasteful.

Condoning and encouraging same sex couples-Africa, Asia, South America East Indian culture.

Eating with a fork and spoon- Japan/China they stick with chop sticks.

Using your left hand to eat- Middle eastern cultures have used that hand for wiping their bums and then washing it of course but still left handed eating is still a fop ah.

I was wondering where this came from?

"Here in the US we encourage pregnancy and birth and have nothing against a family having four or more children."

I have not seen that at all. Most of the US averages is two and over half have no kids in the home.

The only large families I see(which is more then 3) is mostly mexicans(many) and a few religious families(not many...maybe 3).

In California the family size is is 1 child sometimes two but if you walk into a store with more then that people stare. My family has only two but we hope to adopt very soon.

So I would be interest where your figures come from.

    Have a good night!

I found this question very interesting. Lets, look at the health care system. In most developing countries individuals will walk miles to get medical attention and in most cases will not be refused. But, here people die in front of the hospital in many cases down the street (Most die nameless). This concept of family or community. I married outside my culture which is American. Not focusing on my wife's culture. I was introduced to a real concept of family. We would associate this type of support as "enabling" the incompetent. Here, clearly we can justify our motivations of why someone like my father who is dying of diabetes can be left to rot by his estranged brothers and sisters who focus on the fact that he has not be employed for 15 years, no healthcare, and has a masters degree? Something that is unheard of in other cultures we have developed the "evolutionary" skills to mask our sense of humanity. True, I can see both sides but looking at the other-side ours looks real toxic. Lastly, marrying young? Well other cultures support marriages at young ages to continue family and tribal relations. Here it is quite the opposite, we reject all types of young marriage or even marriage at all. And we see how young girls are being exploited in many deep Urban Areas? Quite confusing how there are no answers for the pedophiles who run wild in our society. We could never have a pedophile marry? OOOoh, no but yet we turn our heads to the massive horrid rapes of young girls? Only give a few mins of tears on the evening news. Such, a binary existence, love and hate can't exist in the same dimension? How to deal with our social pollution?

    Thanks for your Question

    Cheers

Kissing for one. There are many countries that find spit swapping to be disgusting.

Killing people but that's barbaric anywhere.

Promiscuity is more heavily participated in in countries outside of the US.

What I think is the worst of any practices is bigotry. Hating people because of the color of their skin, their religious beliefs, their age, their sexual preference, their weight, whatever...
