Should Women have the same rights as men?

Now I am not talking about equal pay for equal work. Nor am I talking about equality in the job market. Nor am I talking about TITLE VIX, or the right of women to vote.

What I am talking about however is the right women claim they have about going topless in the same areas that men are allowed to be shirtless. This plus the rights of mothers to show their breastfeeding pictures on Facebook.

In recent years www.gotopless.com and www.tera.ca have said indecent exposure laws are discriminatory toward women. That women should be allowed to remove their tops in the same spots that men are allowed to remove their shirts without fear of prosecution. They claim that the human breast is not a Sexual object and that it is against the constitution.

They also cite the fact that Facebook regularly removes pictures of breast feeding women calling them porn and that Facebook has no right to remove those pictures.

I would like to hear everyone's thoughts on this. Thank you.

Update:

Sorry all. I thought I had asked for this to be in Society and Culture. I don't know how it got in the

Gays, Lesbians, and Transgendered area.

Update 2:

Excellent answer Erica. Number one in my book so far.

I've yet to see any men breastfeeding in public, but it's a pretty simple equation...

Breasts ARE sexual objects - TO MANY MEN.

Some men are incapable of self-control.

Ergo, exposing sexual organs can be DANGEROUS, regardless of which ones they are, or why.

Laws against females going topless are designed to protect females from being harassed and/or sexually abused by men who have no self-control, or morals.

There are many laws that are unfair and stupid, but they exist to protect us from stupid people, and to protect them from us if we act stupidly. If I'm sitting at a red light at a crossroads at 4:00 am, and there are no vehicles visible for miles in any direction, it's STUPID that I should have to sit there and wait for the light to change. The law that says we must stop at red lights is to protect us and others from having accidents. If there are no "others", the law serves no function, yet we are still obliged to obey it. I believe I am intelligent enough to decide when it's safe or unsafe to disregard a red light, but the lawmakers know that not everyone is intelligent enough to make this decision, ergo a law is put in place. I don't like it, but it's the price I must pay for living in society, and driving a car. We all have to make certain concessions to live in certain ways, and certain places. If you don't like laws, then you always have the option to go live in the wilderness, where you can expose your breasts, and ignore red lights to your heart's content.

Why is it acceptable for everyone to be so openly exposed to breasts in the media and live in a porn obsessed culture, yet bread feeding is viewed as indecent and obscene despite the fact it is surely one of the most natural things in the world?

In my view, this is because we are so used to the sexualised image of breasts. Breasts are essentially udders, and lactating breasts are not typically viewed as attractive unlike the sort pornography and other media expose us to. Men can't and should not claim breasts – that is, objects that are only meant for their sexual gratification.

Clearly (in the west at least), it’s acceptable to expose breasts in a sexual way or in sexual situations, but not for instinctual reasons? Is this a justified stance to take? I don't think so.

Women have every right to go topless and breastfeed in public. I mean if we were in the amazon then the women would be doing all of that yet their society is stable enough socially. Parts of africa does this as well as australia. People are are so sensitive to nudity.

Breastfeeding is not porn! It is the natural way to feed an infant. We ARE mammals, for Frigga's sake!

As for the going topless, there are beaches where you can do just that. Personally, I dont want every Ivan, Nikolai and Mikhail to be looking at my big boobs!

yess that would be nice i think.

but why do woman always have to show off when their breastfeeding, its kind of annoying like they are bragging that they can take show their boobs because it's natural while other girls are not allowed to. that would be like showing pictures of ur vagina as the baby is coming thru.

but also i think woman wear shirts as more of a protective layer because their boobs are very tenter and sensitive and vulnerable.

This is stupid, first of all we're not shoving them down by not letting them show their breasts in public I think it should be common sense the reason why we don't allow them to go shirtless in public. About the breast feeding pictures, Why in the blue hell would you upload them?

I don't believe in censorship. Anyone should be able to post any picture they want and walk around naked anywhere they want.
