Did you know that you can practice golf without actually hitting a golf ball?

I actually came to this realization a long time ago. I went to the range for the first time this year a couple of days ago after not playing golf since November due to winter. I swing a club in my apartment daily and do some chipping(with plastic golf balls) and putting(regular ball). I found that I wasn't rusty at all unlike last year and I pretty much did the same thing. I haven't hit driver yet so it remains to be seen how I do with that club, but the clubs I did hit, I hit pretty well. There were some exceptions of course, but overall I give myself a high grade. Unlike last year, I was a bit concerned about playing until I fixed a few swing issues. I feel like I could go out tomorrow with confidence without practicing hitting driver. I wonder how many people practice golf without hitting golf balls?

I for one, do not practice golf without actually hitting a golf ball. I'm spoiled as far as weather. I have no down time. I live in San Diego, California, and honestly...I don't practice, I play and I play every chance I can. I did have a 6 month hiatus when I suffered a stress fracture in my left lower tibia from the torque against it from golfing; when I returned the biggest obstacle was the short game. It takes time and practice to maintain feel and that's a hugh part of the short game...yeah, execution is important, but fundamentals are routine. You lose feel and it also sucks away your confidence. Jason G, you know a game without confidence can only go downhill.

Perhaps your success this year, despite the same training program is wisdom and decreasing your expectations. Sometimes we put so much added stress upon ourselves related to this game and our expectations, that it's a no win situation. As years go on and you become a more experienced player you realize to let go of your disappointments and focus on the shot at hand, you understand that you will lose some feel and rhythm in your swing when you haven't played and you have better control of the ups and downs that confront you. As a seasoned golfer you've established some confidence, that confidence can take you far. Perhaps you're also in a better frame of mind with your life in general; we all know how our life's outside of golf can influence our games greatly.

Anyway, just some speculation....go out there and tee it up, have fun....here comes the sun. = )
