Brilliant, Beautiful Gardeners, specifically mycelium mavens...?

Any tips for a first-time-fungus grower? erm, *ahem* culinary that is, no common buttons, I'd prefer morells or them there baby bella thangs (krimeny is it spelled crimini?). Would you recommend a kit or trying the dead tree with culture inoculant technique?

Zone 5, North West PA (or was that north central) access to various goodly rotten varieties of trees, (rural woods.)

Morn'n girl, I missed this last night.

For a newbie I'd stick to the cheap and easy "plug spawn" varieties.

Rotten wood sounds like it would make sense but it's always contaminated with foreign fungi.

You want 5-10" fresh cut hardwood logs about four feet long that have been aged two weeks to allow anti-fungals released by cutting to dissipate (most plants produce anti-fungals when cut). Then drill holes, pound in plugs, cover with wax and stack in the shade - presto - mushies this fall or next spring depending on the species.

With the exception of the Shitake, you should be able to find the others growing naturally in your own PA woods.

Fungi Perfecti offers courses on propagation of mushrooms for $1200 bucks. I can supply the same course and mine comes free with a warm bed and fine dining.

    Hello Sister Mycelia!

I am from south central michigan, and to be honest, I've mostly spoored wet wood for my farming as you allude to in your question. In my experience, once inoculated, the site will produce forever after.

I have also done the laboratory kinda thing, and both systems have their merit. If "sharing/selling" is on the agenda, then go for the rows of glass jars. If it is purely personal, go for the forest spirits.....

I don't believe morells can be grown, but I aren't a shroom farmer neither.

I really just wanted to say HEY.
