Is there any good free registry scan software out there?

Hi. I have been using my computer for a long time now but eventually it has become very very slow now and its very frustrating. I discovered that its the damaged registry that has caused it. Please does anyone know if there is a free and good without a spyware or malware in it software out there? Thanks

    It's probably not the registry.

Run Windows Update and make sure you have all the latest security patches, service packs, and drivers. Uninstall old programs, games, and delete video and audio files you don't use anymore. Windows needs a good chunk of hard drive space to keep things running smoothly and will spit out an an error message when things get too tight.

Run Disk Cleanup to get rid of temporary files. Get rid of all but the most recent restore point. Reduce the number of programs that run at startup. Remove unneeded programs from the Startup folder on the start menu.

Click start, run, type msconfig. Click the startup tab and uncheck the programs you don't need to start at startup. If you don't know what a program does leave it alone until you do. Often programs that start with Windows have a setting in their options to stop them from starting with Windows so check those out, too.

Update and run your anti-virus and/or anti-malware programs(s). Delete everything that they find. Make sure you're running the latest version of your favorite web browser. It'll be more secure and probably perform better. Disable or uninstall unneeded browser add-ons, toolbars, etc. The more you have the longer it'll take for your web browser to start.

Analyze your hard drive(s) with disk defragmenter. If it says to, defragment your hard drive(s).

The registry is the least likely cause of a slow computer. First off, the registry is tiny. If you don't believe me run regedit and make a backup and save it to your desktop. Registry cleaners make a big deal about "errors" in the registry. The truth is that a registry entry is only looked at when it's needed. So all those unused entries are ignored by Windows by default so it's already as if they don't exist. Removing them does absolutely nothing.

Anywho, if after all that your performance doesn't improve then it might be time to start over with a clean slate.

Copy all of your important files to an external hard drive or burn them to CD or DVD. After do a factory restore to reset to like when it was first new. The instructions for doing a restore vary by brand so check your user's manual. If you don't have a copy you can download one from the manufacturer's web site. Just search their support section with your model number.

There are many ways to improve the performance of your system.

Here is what you need to do:

    (1) Download "CCleaner" and run a disk and registry cleanup: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

I have done some reading online and I have recently learnt that there is a contervery over whether cleaning your registry using registy cleaning tools actually improves performance. I have noticed that when I scan my computer right after I re-install my operating system, registry cleaners find a ton of errors. How can there be errors in a fresh system? Also, once you've cleaned your registry with one registry cleaning software, a different software would still find errors. A lot of professionals say that cleaning your registry actually messes up your registry more than fixing it. Personally, I had to re-install some of my software after running a scan with "PCTools Registry Mechanic" and "Systweak Advanced System Optimizer" also gave me a lot of trouble. However, from what I've heard, CCleaner only deletes registry keys that are fully safe, so you shouldn't really worry about it. I have been using CCleaner for a long time without any issues. But, what I suggest is for you to re-install your operating system.

    (2) Run a full system scan using your security software. Once you've done that, download "Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (Free Edition)" and run a scan with it: http://www.malwarebytes.org/

If you are looking for a good, free anti-virus program, then consider one of these:

    ▪ Avira AntiVir Personal (Free Antivirus): http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus

    ▪ Avast! Free Antivirus 6: http://www.avast.com/en-au/free-antivirus-download

    ▪ Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE): http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

In regards to what "OL SpitFire" said above, AVG actually has terriable detection rate: http://www.av-comparatives.org/en/comparativesrevi...

    (3) Read my answer in this link, where I have given a list of things you can do to improve your system's performance: http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aj...

    (4) Best way to start fresh is to format your computer.

My preferred options that help clean up your registry and scan for viruses and trojans (more what you want). These:

    - DO NOT have trials

    - DO NOT screw up your computer afterwards

    - DO NOT give you false analysises

    - ARE FREE AND EASY TO USE

    1. http://www.iobit.com/advancedsystemcareper.html

Advanced System Care has been leading the way for years, top10 most downlaoded from download.com

    2.www.piriform.com/ccleaner

CCleaners help fix your registry and backs up your registry just in case you delete anything you don't want to.

    2. AVG Free

    No need to explain.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com/

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

    computer hope (dot) com

    windows(dot) com

    source forge (dot) net
