Okonkwo's life is the main focus of this novel and it is about the downfall of him and his life. He always strives for masculinity, superiority, status in the tribe, ect. This ultimately leads to his downfall.

Everything okankwo has ever know falls apart as the christian missionaries change his way of life. He is unable to watch the foundation for his society to fall apart so he hangs himself.
