Is the AMA essentially a union?

Seems like members get paid lots. Is anyone trying to "bust" them?

Update:

I like Audreys' answer, but will extend to allow others to contribute. The other answer seems tangential to the question(s). Seems to have touched a nerve, like people in other unions should work for free because their school is so easy, or they do not have to go to school at all.

Your health is your responsibility. All this so called "free" stuff is what is driving up costs. If you do not understand that you are not going to be prepared for the unintended consequences of this bill. If you are in the economic bracket who pays ; you will pay more. If you are in the economic bracket who can't pay either you may not be able to be seen by a doctor because of the shortage or you will only get treatment if the government allows it.

This criticism of doctors is unreal. They go to school for years at a hefty cost and many are in high risk of lawsuits and they work lousy hours. It is not a union job where you work your forty hours and must get all your legal breaks. Patients hit them, kick them, bite them, get their aids infected blood on them and then turn around and sue them.
