Question about brocoli plants?
For the first time this year my brocoli has grown and seems to be doing good, but the plants are all noticably skinnier at the base then they are higher up the stalk, is this normal? The plants are about 14-18" tall and look really good several have small heads forming but the stalks seem like a problem to me any advice is appreciated, I garden every year, but never get my brocoli out soon enough, so I have no exp.
Might have been planted a little shallow, bought plants this year, so not sure.

This is normal growth for broccoli. The stem just above the root crown is narrow and tough, but above this point, the plant stores moisture and nutrients to fuel flower and seed development once the weather turns hot and dry. Harvest broccoli while the heads are still tight, before they elongate into "fingers" of flower clusters. The buds should be small and compact; heads that have gone too far look "knobby", with lots of small bumps of flowers about to open.
The smaller, more delicate broccoli leaves can be steamed and eaten like kale. They're more tender and sweeter than kale, but you may have to cut out the tough midrib.
