If you are looking for a free anti-virus software that have a much better detection rate than Norton, McAfee and many other paid-software, I highly recommend on the three below in concurrent with "Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Free Edition" (MBAM):

    ▪ Avira AntiVir Personal (Free Antivirus): http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus

    ▪ Avast! Free Antivirus 6: http://www.avast.com/en-au/free-antivirus-download

    ▪ Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE): http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Avira and Avast have one of the best detection rates. Once you run a scan with one of the three above, also run a scan with MBAM, which will allow you to improve your detection rate. These software are also very light on your system.

    TIPS:

    ▪ Don't spend your money on "Internet Security Suites", which slow down your system.

    ▪ Don't install 3rd party firewall software, which also slow down your system. I think the "Windows Firewall" that comes with Windows is sufficient.

    ▪ All you have to do is surf the Web safely: Avoid clicking on all the pop-ups; when you download or install a new software, make sure to look into it before going ahead; use the latest version of the Internet browser you are using.

    ▪ Keep Windows updates.

    ▪ Turn on pop-up blocker that comes with "Internet Explorer". Set it to medium or high. If you are using "FireFox", download "Adblock Plus" add-on, because FireFox does not have a good built-in pop-up blocker.

    ▬▬▬▬▬

"AVG Anti-virus" has a lower detection rate than Avira and Avast! You can compare the detection rates of various anti-virus software in this link: http://www.av-comparatives.org/en/comparativesrevi...

When you compare bench-marks of security software, make sure you differentiate "Internet Security Suites" from "anti-virus software" and whether they are testing the latest version. Take a look at whether they've looked at various aspects of the security software: proactive detection, on-demand detection, performance, removal tests, false positives, etc.

There are many different opinions about what the best antivirus is. Personally I strongly recommend the free version of Avira Antivirus, you can download it for free here http://j.mp/1r4WKDS I recommend this software because the latest version is much better then all the others and will give you a full protection of your pc from all virus or spyware.

    Microsoft Security Essentials

Nearly all mainstream anti-virus programs, free or paid, offer good protection and everyone has their favorite. I like Microsoft Security Essentials - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials...

For reports about individual A-V products see http://www.av-comparatives.org/ or http://www.av-test.org/ or http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/index

If you want something quantitative, then that depends on who is doing the testing, all three of those sites give different a-v software as the best. Someone said that AVG doesn't have good detection rates and gave the URL of a comparison site, funny enough, other comparison sites rate it very highly - you pays yer money (or not) and takes yer choice.

Get a good anti-virus program like at

    http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

    or

    http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus

    You can also go to

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and do a free online scan that will kill just about any threat out there.

Getting the Malwarebytes program at www.download.com is also a good idea.

And afterwards if you don't have a firewall yet, get one of these to protect your system:
