If you are just making a baby blanket, you don't need a pattern. Use whatever yarn and needle size you feel most comfortable with and make a swatch. To make a swatch, cast on, say, 10 stitches and make a square piece in the stitch you will be using. Measure that and figure out how many stitches you will need to cast on to make the blanket the size you want. As easy as that! And, of course, cast off when the length feels right to you.
I hope this helped! Good luck (:

I usually use a bulky, fluffy yarn for blankets. Red Heart makes the most gorgeous one called Baby Clouds. I have also made baby blankets by running two strands of regular yarn (also called worsted weight, weight group 4, medium, or 4-ply) together. Both ways work.
Whichever you choose, this is what I usually do. With a 9mm needle (US size 13) I usually cast on about 80 stitches. If you're not in the habit yet, I recommend casting on with both needles held together. When you're done casting on, pull out one needle and work with it. By doing it this way, it is TONS easier to knit that first row.
Knit all rows. That honestly makes the best blankets anyway, even though I know other stitches, too. When it's big enough, you're done. Cast off.
