Solar X -class flares imminent? Atomic meltdowns a result?

I have now read from several sources that we may very likely experience catastrophic X class solar flares as we enter into the upcoming solar maximum. Said flares if directed toward earth as some are scheduled to may cause a global power and communication interruption/ blackout for several days to months--no one seems to know.

What concerns me regarding this scenario is the lesson we have just learned from the Japan nuclear cotastrophy. If there is an extended global power failure, that would leave all of the nuclear power plants on a world wide basis out of power for cooling. Once their fuel reserves run out and local water supplies dry up due to lack of pumping power, they ALL would potentially go into a complete meltdown-- virtually simultaneously making Japan and Chernobyl looking like a fire drill. What then? Is my scenario way out of line?

Update:

I am well aware of the x-class flares that have hit us in the past but these are supposed to be off the scale.

It is impolite to just make stuff up.

The next Solar Maximum is expected (by Solar astronomers, I don't care what morons like Patrick Geryl think) to be LESS THAN AVERAGE. This is point one. Point two is: Solar flares occur at ANY time. Some of the nastiest ones have struck the Earth in the middle of a Solar Minimum. Scary? Only if you are an insurance company insuring communications satellites and really... when has an insurance company ever been frightened? Hell, if they have to pay out a $700 million dollar policy, they will just raise everyone ELSE'S rates to cover it.

In 2003 and 2005 during the Solar Minimum, the Earth was hit by some really wild X class solar storms. Did you notice? Didn't think so.

No one can predict when the next "off the scale" event will be, so if you heard someone do so, he was either lying, an idiot (like Patrick Geryl) or a con-man that wanted you to buy his DVD on folding tinfoil hats.

Get a grip. If anything, the situation shows how safe nuclear power is. Consider that forty year old plants were hit with an earthquake five times the strength they were designed for and yet they still shut down safely. The generators came on like they were supposed to when grid power was cut. Then the tsunami hit and the generators were wiped out. However, the battery backup still worked for the designed eight hours. The problem happened when no new generators could be put in. Even so the problems have been minimal--media scare mongering for ratings not withstanding.

Here is an informative article describing the situation:

    http://bravenewclimate.com/2011/03/13/fukushima-si...

And here is where you find current, factual status information:

    http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/tsunamiupdate0...

    Historical status:

    http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/2011/fukushima...

And a slide presentation that describes the effects:

    http://www.slideshare.net/iaea/radiological-monito...

And here is a chart that helps make sense of the numbers:

    http://www.xkcd.com/radiation/

    - they ALL would potentially go into a complete meltdown

And the containment vessels would keep the nuclear material in--that is what containment vessels are designed to do, except for the ones at Chernobyl which was badly designed. This is a non-issue.

People really need to study the science rather than getting their information from sci-fi B movies.

Based on observations taken over the last few years, the next Solar Maximum should be LESS strong than the previous ones (especially 1986). However, based on the success of the Big 2012 Hoax and on impossible doomsday movies, the number of "doomsday predictions" is already going off the scale.

Solar flares do NOT cause power failures. At "best" they are accompanied by a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) which, most of the time, miss us (space is big). When one hits us, then it pushes on our magnetosphere. If it pushes it too far, the magnetosphere snaps back into place, causing a "magnetic reconnection event". It is this event that emits a pulse of energy that affects long conductors (e.g., main power distribution lines) on Earth.

After the power failure of March 1986 in the province of Quebec (Canada), when six million people were left without power for nine hours (total number of deaths = 0), all civilized countries installed protection systems to prevent repeats.

This was shown during the man-made blackout of 2003, causing a power failure in the Northeast corner of North America. All of it? No. The protection systems installed by the province of Quebec prevented the cascade failure from affecting its distribution system.

The rest of your scenario is just an attempt to whip you up into a frenzy.

We usually have 1 to 2 days, or MORE warning before a Solar flare or CME gets to earth. Solar activity has been monitored 24/7/ 365.25 by solar satellites for more than 30 years now. Satellites and power plants can be powered down and/or put into hibernation mode with plenty of time, AND the Earth's magnetosphere usually protects the surface areas except around the magnetic poles. The Earth's and Sun's magnetic fields actually connect during CME. This has happened several times since January 28. 2008. (Maybe it was January 18). Look up the Science Daily for that day. That's my source for the connections. You are panicking because of ignorance.

" If you think education is expensive, try ignorance"

Source(s): http://spaceweather.com/ http://www.solen.info/solar/ I monitor these sites at least every few days when I have access to a PC, sometimes more than once a day, and I've been doing this since 2006, despite being in a hospital, with no PC access, for almost two months, and a nursing home for for 3 months and 1 week, with occasional and enough stamina to go to the PC that was available 24/7. Yes, I've also had to replace my hard-drive, so the data on the old hard drive is currently inaccessable.

RELAX the earth magnetic field and atmosphere is a shield

IF there was any threat appropriate safety measures would be taken

the light from the flare reaches the earth at C the speed of light in about 8 minutes but the particles are MUCH slower and would take days or weeks. We would be warned by the light

delicate communication satellites would be at some risk but they are shut down as a precaution

there have been many solar events ever heard of any catastrophes?

Well i hope you're wrong, but you may have a point there. Japan was supposed to be the most prepared nation for disaster and they couldn't save their power plant that lost power. I hope somebody is thinking very hard on the possibility of an extended power outage all over the world and what could be done to keep the pumps running long enough to shut down all the reactors.

We've been hit by several x-class flares already this year. I bet you didn't notice. No one ever does. And it's very likely no one will during the next solar max in 2013 either. No, it's not going to affect nuclear power plants. It just doesn't work that way.
