Has anyone heard of "gravitational micro-lensing"?

    Yes.

    Here's an example of a paper (from 2005) describing the use of the technique to discover a jovian-mass planet orbiting a star about 10,000 light years from us in the general direction of the Galactic centre. The same collaborators were involved in the summary published recently finding that there are many "drifiting" planets (not orbiting stars) based on data collected over the last 5 years.
