When Muslims say Jesus was not crucified, what do they mean?

Do they mean that Jesus was literally not crucified, or do they mean that he was only physically crucified but not in the spirit? Are there different interpretations, different schools of thought on the subject within Islam?

I don't mean to start an argument or whatever, I'm just trying to understand the Islamic view of Jesus' crucifixion. Thanks.

What Do Muslims Believe about Jesus?

Muslims respect and revere Jesus (peace be upon him). They consider him one of the greatest of God’s messengers to mankind. The Quran confirms his virgin birth, and a chapter of the Quran is entitled ‘Maryam’ (Mary). The Quran describes the birth of Jesus as follows:

(Remember) when the angels said, “O Mary, God gives you good news of a word from Him (God), whose name is the Messiah Jesus, son of Mary, revered in this world and the Hereafter, and one of those brought near (to God). He will speak to the people from his cradle and as a man, and he is of the righteous.” She said, “My Lord, how can I have a child when no mortal has touched me?” He said, “So (it will be). God creates what He wills. If He decrees a thing, He says to it only, ‘Be!’ and it is.” (Quran, 3:45-47)

Jesus was born miraculously by the command of God, the same command that had brought Adam into being with neither a father nor a mother. God has said:

The case of Jesus with God is like the case of Adam. He created him from dust, and then He said to him, “Be!” and he came into being. (Quran, 3:59)

During his prophetic mission, Jesus performed many miracles. God tells us that Jesus said:

“I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. I make for you the shape of a bird out of clay, I breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by God’s permission. I heal the blind from birth and the leper. And I bring the dead to life by God’s permission. And I tell you what you eat and what you store in your houses....” (Quran, 3:49)

Muslims believe that Jesus was not crucified. It was the plan of Jesus’ enemies to crucify him, but God saved him and raised him up to Him. And the likeness of Jesus was put over another man. Jesus’ enemies took this man and crucified him, thinking that he was Jesus. God has said:

...They said, “We killed the Messiah Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of God.” They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but the likeness of him was put on another man (and they killed that man)... (Quran, 4:157)

Neither Muhammad nor Jesus came to change the basic doctrine of the belief in one God, brought by earlier prophets, but rather to confirm and renew it.1

I asked around on this same topic.

Jesus is a very big part of Islam. He is a Prophet, or Messenger of God.

To Muslims, God wouldn't put someone as high as Jesus through all that pain. So he took his soul to heaven and left in his place someone else.

This might not be 100% correct though.

we mean that he literally was not crucified. Allah saved Jesus from the Jews that wanted to crucify him. he made some other man look like him. it sound crazy but that's what a miracle is. it was one of Gods miracles to Jesus.

and to the first and second answers. if Jesus is God why would he allow him self to be killed like that. you people make no sense.

It is likely Bible new the future, which is not possible to me to predict, however Jesus was looking to confirm (fulfil) that future, therefore His death is real! Dying this or other way is not problem to know but Heaven is not in real Universe but must exist from above 5th dimension. Did He had ability to use it powers to make all physics changes, which requires having structural memories of anything, then resurrection can also be possible! Maybe is worth to believe Him for it!

I believe Jesus was crucified because he spoke out about practices such as stoning women and was viewed as causing a uprising amongst the people.....Many people are unjustly killed and God does not stop that either......I think the Message to Man is that thry have to stop doing the killing.....

They mean it was another person that was hung on the cross, while Isa was taken to be with Allah. They believe that Allah would not allow a prophet to die in such a manner.

To help clarify this issue for you, let's go back to the beginning of what are called the Abrahamic religions.

Jews are descended from Abraham through Isaac, who was born as a result of God's promise. God promised Abraham that if old Abe did what God asked him, then God would give him a child, he would be the forefather of a great nation, many other nations would be blessed through him, and his descendants would always walk the earth as long as the world endures.

But Abraham's wife Sarai was already really old, and had always been barren, so she gave Abraham her slave girl, Hagar, to impregnate. Thus Ishmael was born. Later, God came back, and said basically, "That's not what I meant. I am going to give you children from the free woman, not from the slave woman. I will bless Hagar, her son, and his descendants, but the promise of salvation which I am bringing to the world through you does not pass through them".

So Isaac, the younger child, born of the free woman, became Abraham's inheritor, as you can see in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, the lineage is traced person by person, all the way down to Jesus, and every other Jew through descent of marriage, who carry the bloodline of Abraham.

Arabs, the founders of Islam, 2800 years later, claim that they are descended from Ishmael. They claim that the Jews cheated them out of their inheritance, because Ishmael, being the elder son, was the rightful inheritor of God's blessing.

Thus, the foundation of the Islamic religion is to say that all of the scriptures which came down through the ages were lies perpetrated by dirty lying Jews who are nothing but a bunch of dirty lying liars who changed the word of God, and it was Muhammed who received the truth from an angel in a cave, and set things to rights, revealing that Arabs are truly Gods favorite people, and the Jews are nothing but a bunch of dirty lying liars. So Muslim scriptures always insist that scriptures from the Old Testament, as well as the New Testament, both of which were written almost entirely by Jews, are a bunch of lies perpetrated by lying liar Jews.

Thus, the Muslims insist that the account of Jesus on the cross is all lies, because it was written by Jews, and because it says that Jesus was God's son, and through him all peoples of the world can become like children of Abraham by obeying the teachings of scripture, when Muslims insist that Arabs are God's special favorites, God has no son, because human beings are profane and not Holy, so anybody who disagrees with their story needs to have his head chopped off.

We believe that he went to heaven before the people were going to kill him.
