The Cold War could have been prevented if the British and French armies got into Eastern Europe before Russia.
World War I was about nationalism, imperialism and power. It settled little. Germany was held responsible for causing World War I by the victorious allies and they imposed a harsh peace. That led to the rise of Adolf Hitler who started World War II.

Cold War could have been prevented if the leadership of the USSR died immediately following WW2. That or the USA could have left Europe to it's fate. Left the world, in truth.
