I need your help in a trigonometric problem?

Two ships leave a harbor at the same time. One ship is travelling N36° E (North 36 degrees East) at 12 mi/h; the other ship travels at 15 mi/h. After three and one-half hours, they are 46 mi apart. In which direction is the second ship traveling?

I hope you would not need me to explain in detail.

I converted the speed into distance travelled. (15 * 3.5)mi and (12 * 3.5)mi. These are the two sides of the triangle and the third being 46mi.

Then I used the cosine law.

The answer to your question would be: The second ship is travelling N20.96°W (North 20.96° West).

    Hope this Helps!
