new computer? cheap phenom ii or best i7?
I can buy a desktop with a phenom ii 830x4 for $400 which is faster than my present dual core pentium 5yrs old, I am happy with my present computer it's just time to upgrade and pass it down to the kids.
I use it for business, some graphics ... ie MS publisher, I never use it for games.
I like Intel buy at
or should I suck it up and spend the 1000 to buy the i7 processor?

Buy the i5...better deal overall, though the i7 i have is phenomenal. AMD is a budget option but you will get better quality and performance outta the i5/i7 cpus.

Why do you need i7 processor? Even for gaming computer i5 is enough. For business phenom will work perfect, same with graphics. The graphic most depends on what video card do you have.
By the phenom and save the money.
Hope this helps.

You don't need an i7 but a 2500K should be more than enough. Since AMD doesn't list an 830 at least as a "desktop" CPU I cant comment

your not using it for something demanding AMD is obviously better unless you own a plane and a hilltop mansion then get i7
