Do you think that a graphic design artist and photographer needs to go to college?

I want to study those things but lately I've been thinking that MAYBE i dont necessarily need to go to college to learn those things. I know there's a higher chance of me getting a better job with a 4 year diploma than with a certificate of completition of some courses at a regular art school (not college) What do you think about this? i am not saying i will do it but it is one option....Share your opinions and experiences :D

I can only speak for the graphic design industry.

You're half right. Your portfolio and work is what gets you hired, not your degree. But, having a diploma or degree on your resume is what a lot of employers need to see in order to take you seriously enough to even look at your portfolio or work. The reasoning being that if you have no training in design, how good could you possibly be. The employment stats on self taught designers isn't all that encouraging, and I still know designers that went to school right along side me that still haven't gotten a foot in the door. That doesn't mean of course that it can't happen for you if you opt out of school. But you WILL have to work extra hard to get noticed or taken seriously.

Hope that helps. Best of luck.
