HELP!!!!! How to stop 15 month old from chewing off his thumb?

He have full set of front bottom and top teeth. He is 1 1/2 years old and his thumb have calculus on it. He chew till he bleed and he wont stop. Those rubber thumb DON'T work. Beside going to the useless doctor, what else should I do. I was thinking of a bitter spray for cats and dog and spray a little on his thumb. I tried chili but he will just eat it like nothing. What do you think, is it safe if I use the bitter spray made for cats and dog, after all they are nontoxic but not sure if its safe to use on baby/toddler.

The rubber thumb could be a choking hazard. You may want to take a closer look at your son. Does he respond appropriately to other stimuli of pain, or does a knock on the head/fall, etc doesn't seem to bother him? I've never known a child to draw blood and not respond to the pain and stop. I would take a picture of the thumb and have him evaluated to see if he responds to pain appropriately. I remembering hearing of a very rare condition that causes children to hurt themselves because they don't feel the pain that would normally stop them. VERY rare, but you should look into it. If I recall correctly, the case was a little girl who was chewing her lips to the point of bleeding. It was on Discovery Health. Mystery Diagnosis maybe??

it didnt work with my pup doubt it will work for a baby. i agree all the docs are 100% useless. texas pete hot sause may work rather than the salsa. also all the bitter spray is, is vinager and lemon juice. could try that with no delution. or replac with a carrot or apple slice. that works best. good luck.
