Are you friends? Are you lovers? Did something happen in his life that he suddenly has trust issues?

All this matters, but it could be that maybe he has developed feelings for you. Whether they're just sexual, or he really cares about you and wants to know if you feel the same about him...it's very important. What I suggest you should do is bring it up somehow in a conversation later on, and tell him you were curious to why he asked that. It's better to be healthy and express feelings, you know? Get to the bottom of it and really find out his purpose of asking that, just so you two are on the same page.
