or could it be

2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 16 cubic feet

well technically that would be a plane...now if only we had a direction and length in the z axis we could give you a volume of said hole and how much dirt could fit.

we don't know, we just know this hole, not necessarily circular, is 2ft by 2ft in dimension, if we were given a third dimension, there would be no dirt in the hole, because it's a hole.
