I have a Hypothesis for you concerning being stranded on a desert island with lots of water but little food.?
consider you have 2 pieces of bread an apple, 4 crackers and a piece of cake in your pack and you are stranded waiting for someone to hopefully find you. Now your digestive system will devour the food that you eat . but at what rate would you allow yourself to eat it? and what importance is there to ration a set amount of food?
Consider that you can eat it over a week but if the calories are the same what difference does it make to eat it over a week as it would be to eat in within 2 days? If you are injesting the same amount of calories why draw the food out? Why would it make a difference to just eat one cracker per day and drizzle the food into your stomach?
Ok lets see who has the most researched answer. I was randomly thinking this as we drove home on weekend through rugged terrain. The kids were talking about our Simpson Desert and the deaths that have occurred there.
Remember you have water. but no food resources. no fishing etc.

your body adapts.
so the slower you eat, the less it will burn.
its the same principle when people go on those starvation diets.
if the body thinks that it isnt going to be 'fed well', then it slows to accommodate.
thats why many dont really lose weight in percentage to what they are eating.
of course eventually they will if they continue, but not for quite some time.

By spreading the food out you are forcing your body to metabolize the food slower and store fat. Which will in turn keep you alive longer. If you eat all the food within 2 days your body will metabolize it much quicker.
