What would be a good small pet for me?

I am 15 and I love animals, they really are my passion. Unfortunately, my dad is allergic to dogs and cats so I have never been able to have one. I have had rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and hamsters, and currently have a rabbit, guinea pig, and 2 rats. I think all these pets are really cute and sweet, but it just isn't the same as having a dog. In the future, I want to just have one pet to care for, and it is a really hard decision which one. It would be interesting to have a pet I have never had before and for a while I was considering sugar gliders, then ferrets, but I am just not sure. I like rabbits, but they are a lot of work to have in the house, and outside I don't get to see them as much, also if I had a rabbit in the house, it would have to stay in my room all the time, or in the basement because my mom won't allow them to be in the rest of the house. Ferrets sound really fun, but during school, I don't get home until around 4:30 and I am not positive I would probably be able to play with them for a few hours a day, but some days I might not because I have other activities, I worry if I would have enough time for a ferret. Anyway, I am looking for a sweet affectionate pet that likes attention, but isn't too much work.

After reading your post, I can tell you that a ferret is not for you. First off, you have many rodents. Ferrets are not rodents and will very likely kill them if it gets a hold of any of them. Second, Ferrets are extremely high maintenance. They are not caged animals. If you cannot put aside a minimum of 4 hours of play time for them a day, then don't bother. They are companion animals, very much like a dog. They live an average of 6 to 8 years. They are really awesome pets, I have 13. I would recommend waiting until you finish school, whether it is just high school or college. They require a lot of care.

Ferrets sleep for 18-20 hours a day so they would sleep the whole time you are at school. They just need at least 3 hours a day out of their cage. If you get 2 you wont need to play with them as much. They will entertain each other. They are not too much work. They need to be fed, fresh water, floor time and some attention every day. They can get expensive. There are a lot of illnesses/diseases that ferrets get that get expensive to treat. Here is a great ferret website

Whatever you get please adopt. You can look no petfinder.com and at shelters and rescues.

I don't know about you, but I'm a bird lover. I have always had a bird my entire life and they are probably one of my favorite pets. Currently I have a parakeet and a Cockatiel and they both have to be one of the most loving animals I've ever owned. They are very easy to hand train and super easy to take care of. The do need lots of attention, but mine seem to take care of themselves very well when I'm not around to do so myself. Just an idea and something to think about.

I highly recommend gerbils. I am a gerbil breeder and I am in LOVE with gerbils. They are very easy to care for and so much fun! You will never get sick of a gerbil like some people would with a hamster. Here are some facts:

    They do not stink

    Extremely loveable

    Must be kept in pairs

    Easy to tame

And thats only some facts! If you are interested in gerbils, and since I am a breeder, email me if you would like any (for free) at Lordiforevermore@yahoo.com :)

When your older, maybe you can have a little dog. I have a dog and I am 10. I take care of it alot. A dog is not all just fun, its hard work to. So be careful and good luck on getting a dog or cat! :)

you said you were considering a ferret or a sugar glider and those are great pets!! sugar gliders are fun to play with and so are ferrets, if you want something cute and cuddly a degu would be perfect! they are smaller versions of chinchillas.

    here is a picture: http://www.google.com/imgres?q=degu&um=1&hl=en&cli...

but degus are hard to find!! chinchillas are great too here is a website:

A gerbil. :) They're easy to care for, they don't smell, they don't bite, they're active during the day and sleep at night, and they're very clean.
