can mugo pine bushes be planted in a large pot?

and left in the pot in the winter cold months outdoors..I'm in zone 5. Or do I have to plant it in the ground in order for it to survive the winter months? Won't it also go dormant in the pot outdoors also?

You have to 'plunge' the pot. The variation of temperatures high/low during the winter is tempered by burying the pot. Sun can 'thaw' a pot too quickly.

ADD: You can also put it in a protected spot and mulch heavily around the pot.
