Help I found a lost parakeet?!?

Our friend brought over this parakeet that they had found just out in a tree. I have it in this long mesh cage that I use for my rabbits/guinea pigs in the yard. We gave it a shallow container of water and some fruits/veggies/cheerios, but we are going to get some parakeet food tomorrow. Any suggestions for care or anything, I have never had a bird before. We might consider keeping it if we can't find the owners so any care tips, websites or anything helps.

Update:

I have the cage inside with newspaper underneath, but I was just saying that I use it in the yard for my rabbits :) sorry for the confusion. Also the parakeet is sleeping a lot, is that okay?

Update 2:

It is green and yellow, sorry

I wish people who actually OWNED birds were more like you. You gave it fruits and vegetables. That in itself is amazing. Most people just feed their birds seed. As soon as you get the parakeet food, you won't need the cheerios, but keep feeding it fruits and veggies. They are a vital part of any parrot's diet that most people never offer. Don't keep the bird outside unless the temperature is fairly moderate, because the extreme heat could cause sickness in the bird. Other than that, take the bird to the vet to get it checked for parasites and buy some bird protector. I don't know what else to say, mostly because I'm dumbfounded that someone actually made a genuine effort to feed a bird fruits and veggies without any prior bird experience.

I hope your little bird is OK. Keep him inside and warm for now. You're doing a good job.

Years ago my dad found a parakeet outside and brought it to the house. He never left our sides after that. He was so glad to be rescued that he would actually go outside on my mother's head when she hung up clothes and forgot he was on her head. She always headed back in quickly, but he never made a move to fly away. He must have been young because he lived a long time for a keet. He talked and entertained us and I'll never forget him. I was only 10 or 11 and was already a bird lover and have had bird most of my life now.

What a good person you are to take this little guy. I hope he gives you half as much love as mine did us.
