Is there a DIY test for herding instinct in a puppy?
I have a 4-month-old Black Mouth Cur crossed with Rhodesian Ridgeback. In appearance he could pass for a pure-bred Ridgeback, which got me wondering what he might have inherited from the cur. A herding instinct is probably the most distinguishing characteristic between the two.
How do you tell if a dog has such an instinct?
thx.
Black Mouth Cur is not an AKC breed, but in my region, recognizable to anybody who knows about working dogs. They have been the farm/ranch dog of choice ever since Americans started settling the west, basically a scent hound with a strong herding instinct, and a temperament that makes for a great family pet. I've owned them before, and they really are exceptional.
As far as herding goes, they are "headers" if it makes a difference, as distinguished from "heelers." The Catahoula cur is a good analogy.
Don't bother with the lectures about "BYB," this pup was bred by hog hunters with plenty breeding experience who care more about the dogs themselves, and their ability to perform a particular purpose, than pedigree. This really is an impressive dog.
I'm not the one with experience, other than as dog owner. If I had cows I could try it out but I live in the city.
