The diameter of an electric cable is normally distributed, with a mean of 0.8 inch and a standard deviation of 0.01 inch. What is the probability that the diameter will exceed 0.83 inch? (Give the answer to four decimal places.)

    .83 is .03 above the mean of .8

    since the standard deviation is .01, then the deviation you are looking for is 3 standard deviations

    You can look up the probability of a sample from any normal distribution being 3 or more standard deviations from the mean.
