As Houston as pointed out, being proactive about the interests of elements outside of ourselves is a way of looking out for ourselves. We are as much part of of the world as they are a part of us.
If we had done nothing but counted on the charity of some outside force, we would have gone extinct a long time ago.

- I'll answer this from the purely selfish standpoint. If the wrong animals, or the wrong amount of animals, become extinct, so will we. We eat a lot. We eat plants and creatures that are dependent of the survival of a critical mass of species. We need enough of the right kind of insects to pollinate our vegetables and fruits. We need enough insectivores to reduce mosquitoes and destructive (to human) pests. We need enough forms of fish to keep an appropriate habitat for the one's we eat. The list goes on.
Some may argue human impact from natural extinction is just that, and should not be tampered with. But allowing man-caused extinction is the same as hitting yourself with a stick.

We can help correct the mistakes that were made. No we cannot save a planet, that is silly. We can clean up our messes. If 10% of all humans donated one day a week to cleaning up trash, it would be a start.
Some do already, so the effort is good.
I do not worry about anything, I am concerned with the events of this day, this moment.
Give peace a chance.

Warming which we caused...extinctions which we caused...but taking responsibility for any of this or maybe stopping it is just "being too big for our britches"? This kind of bullsh!t really annoys me.
