How do you determine the amount of oxygen in a product if you you know the mass of the oxide?

I'm taking a chem lab and in the experiment we found that the mass of the oxide is .2894 g. Then it goes on to ask "what is the amount of oxygen in the product". I thought they were the same thing. How do I convert it?

In an oxide, there is some other element that has reacted with the oxygen. i.e., MgO = magnesium oxide, FeO = iron(II) oxide, etc. The mass of the oxygen is the mass of the whole oxide minus the mass of the other element.
