Are melanomas always cancerous?

Can you have a benign melanoma or are they not called melanomas if they are benign? If you have a melanoma removed and it is cancerous then what would be least amount of treatment you would need? Can surgery ever be enough?

Update:

Nooo, I don't have a melanoma. I know someone who apparently did and let's say I am just a little skeptical so was doing some homework.

Melanomas are by definition always cancerous. Their benign counterparts are called nevi or moles.

The primary treatment is surgical excision with a wide margin. And yes - quite often (but not always), surgery is enough.

I've had Melanoma and I'm thankful it was found before it went to stage 4. I had it removed in 1995 and yes, it left a large scare on my back but I'm still here to write about it! If you suspect you may have it, get it looked at and get it removed. It will kill you in the long run.

I had Basal Cell Carcinoma surgery just this past Tuesday on three places, nose, chest and back and although it is a very slow acting carcinoma it can become life threatening over many years. It will leave scars also but at least I know I once again have beaten the odds!

Never mess around with any cancer, get it taken care of the best way you can!

Melanoma is cancer, plain and simple. You can get melanoma in other places besides a mole, so there isn't a name for something that doesn't exist..

BCC is not deadly. It doesn't metastasize to your organs.
