A "red neck" is someone from the country. If you are a farmer, who spends a lot of time out doors, then your head, forearms, and neck get sunburned (but the rest of you doesn't, unless you take your shirt off).

Interesting take on some of these answers. I always thought it was when you let someone get under your skin, and allow yourself to get so worked up and angry that you turn red from the neck up. Not mentioning any names *coughfartsneezeknowitallfartfartsneezecough*

It used to be fashionable to have lily-white skin; especially women. The upper classes worked indoors or wore bonnets, gloves or carried parasols to protect them from the sun. The lower classes usually worked as laborers. The back of their necks would get sun-burned from being out in the weather. Hence "red necks". Now, having a tan is fashionable; whether real or spray.

The term came from Ricky "Red Neck" Rudd. You see, Ricky had a real bad crash one race, and his car caught fire (this was before NASCAR invented Ethanol and the Schrader barrier, so the cars weren't very safe), burning his neck. As NASCAR's most popular driver, his fans painted their necks red to show their support for Ricky "Red Neck" Rudd. That is why.
