Chief Mates oral question.....?

What will be your action when you see a free fall lifeboat launched without any prior notification by a ship on your right ahead without altering your ships course?

Assuming that you are underway on passage, your very first action is to advise the Engine Department that you may shortly be required to maneuver the main engines. This is both for safety as well as common courtesy between the Deck and Engineering departments.

Even where an Engine room telegraph is available, it is usual to advise the Engineer on watch by telephone before ringing 'Stand-by' when the vessel is in a 'Full underway' situation.

You must avoid collision with the lifeboat by altering your course and stopping your vessel - there may be persons in the lifeboat-attempt to contact the vessel ahead of you(by radio, sound signal,aldis-whatever is available) Remain with the lifeboat to establish if it is occupied. Report the incident to the coastguards (by radio)

If the vessel ahead shows signs of being aware of the loss of a lifeboat,be prepared to take evasive action and keep your distance.

If an examiner were to ask me so vague a question I would ask him (or her!) to explain where this was taking place (at sea,in a confined channel, etc.) and why you would be constrained from altering course.

U shouldn't be that close to any ship to have to avoid any craft or movement. But IF U were take action and turn away from the approaching vessel.
