Suggestion for cruise first timer?

I have never been on a cruise before and would like suggestions for a "first timer". Which cruise line should I try? What length of a cruise should I look for?

I would like to try to depart from Galveston or New Orleans. These are both within driving distance for me. There are several 3, 4, and 5 day cruises. Is 3 or 4 days long enough to really get a "feel" for it? Any suggestions or ideas on how to get a good deal?

It would be just me and my daughter for this first cruise. She is 8 and loves to travel. She and I are going to test it out to see if the rest of the family would enjoy taking a cruise.

All of the answers seem to be pretty good ( i have never done Princess Cruise)

I have been on many cruises and love it. That doesn't mean you will. Some things to keep in mind ,

I have done the short cruises and longer ones. and it seems that the shorter the cruise the older the ship and the lower quality the food.so if you do try a shot cruise ( 4 or 5 days ) keep in mind that it all gets better on a 7 or 10 day cruise.

Carnival is called the fun ship and we usually go carnival. we tried Royal Caribbean , but didnt like it. i felt like it was a senior citizens cruise. But then it was only a 4 day. So many of the lines are changing to include fun activities to be like Carnival Cruise .

I have taken people with me from time to time and NEVER had anyone not book a cruise on their own afterword . it is very fun.

Here a few simple tips for getting the best price on your cruise:

Cruise when most kids are in school. As less demand equal lowers prices, cruise when other can't.

    1. Book either far in advance or at the last-minute (i.e., 3-6 weeks out)-as these are the times when the best deals can be found.

    2. Surf the web for deals. This will help you find the sailings with the lowest demand, but don't buy at the price advertised. As cruise lines only let agencies promote retail prices, you can do better.

    3. Once you find a sailing you like, you need to get custom quotes directly from agents. You can contact each agency yourself, or you can put a quote request into http://www.cruisecompete.com/ and let the agents come to you with their best offers.

    4. When you compare offers, always make sure you're comparing apples-to-apples. While all CruiseCompete.com quotes include all charges to make them easy to compare, many sites don't add all charges until the final booking screen. Also, consider the value of onboard credit provided for your cruise especially on Royal Caribbean-owned lines. An extra $100 in your onboard account is just as good as a $100 discount off of your cruise fare.

There are great deals to be had out there, and just following these simple steps can make a huge difference in the cost of your cruise vacation.

Princess was just voted best first time cruise by cruisecritic who are the number one site for all things cruising. I happen to think Princess would be a perfect first time cruise. Also for your first cruise, I think nothing shorter then 7 days is just not long enough.

Well if you are going just to test it out yes a 5 day cruise should be sufficient for the both of you. I would recommend Carnival cruise. so much to ofer for you and your daughter. once you enjoy this one you can do a 7 day one leaving from miami!! its worth it...and also you can stay two nights in miami and explore it...

click on the link i left for you. it is an estimate for you and your daughter leaving from New Orleans in April. you can change it to your specifications.

Hope it helps. if you need any more help email me: cassiecruz919@yahoo.com
