Why do people have to argue over religion so much?

I don't really mean the questions on here, I want to know why there are so many theists who attack other people to try to convince them of different beliefs. We have already had 4 or so Crusades from the Christians, suicide bombings around Israel, Muslims crashing planes into buildings, the Holocaust, a fight between Britain and Catholocism over puritanism, a variety of partial social purges of people who believe in different things, and everyone still insists that God is on their side in every war. Why does everyone try to kill everyone else that doesn't agree except atheists? If anyone has ever heard of a war started by Atheists and fought by Atheists to spread the cause of Atheism, please tell me, because right now they seem like the few sane people that are alive. They don't kill other people to try to make people believe what they do, they don't send around evangelists to people's doors, they don't start wars to spread their beliefs or slaughter innocent women and children to do the same. On the other hand, most of the theists that stand out enough for me to hear about them seem to go around starting wars and using terror tactics to try to convert people. Why can't they all just leave well enough alone? The world has enough sadness already: why do we have to make more just to try to spread our belief about some omnipotent being who we can't actually prove exists and who obviously has so little interest in the world that he never answers a single one of my prayers?

Update:

@freedom: Hitler used Christianity as his sheild for his plans

Communism was originally a plan to make all men equal and try to build a utopia for everyone: it's the greedy people who took advantage of the "equal" system to become rich, powerful despots that were the problem.

@ a lot of people towards the first 18 answers: one, you never really say anything to answer my question

Two, you don't seem to say anything against it

Three, the crusades were ordered by the Pope. You know, the guy who is supposed to speak for god? They then ended with lots of unnecessary bloodshed, theft of wealth, destruction of property, etc because you wanted a city on a large patch of dust.

Four, sorry if it seems like I'm trying to preach and all, but I'm tired of seeing lots of people die in wars that we never had to have in the first place that seem to be connected to religion. I appreciate the charities a lot of people give to, but I'm not really sure how it balances with t

    Your comment and question;

If anyone has ever heard of a war started by Atheists and fought by Atheists to spread the cause of Atheism........

You obviously do not know your history. !)Communism in the former U.S.S.R. was founded by atheists who believed that "religion was the opium of the masses..." and forced their so called sanity (atheism) on the masses.

Nazi Germany under the atheist Hitler, believed the same, and took it upon himself to perform genocide in the name of what...?

Christianity (not atheism) started Universities, Hospitals eg. Hotel Dieu (meaning house of God), Salvation Army and their welfare for the poor, schools and Democracy.

You mention the crusades etc, do you think that the Prince of Peace condoned these idiots and others like this. Have you ever heard of Mother Teresa and thousands like her that help the leppers and the poor. Wars and atrocities are usually started by fanatics or money war lords. Do not paint all people with the same brush. Think! study your history!

Seems you have already seen the reason!

ALL the other religions and atheists live in peace and are ONLY attacked by BAD christians which causes all GOOD christians to despair at the damage they do!

Up until about 40 years back Christianity was thriving and there was no conflict with others but in just those few short years the modern christians have become intolerant, hate filled, bigoted and persecuting resulting in a growing backlash against christianity and causing christianity to loose over ten percent in less than a decade with the loss accelerating!

The self destruction of Christianity is underway and the only thing that can stop it is to abandon the terrible human emotions, seek to rediscover the idea of a loving god and act like it!

Some religions think that they must try to convert none believers and that everyone will have some kind of horrible fate if they don't believe what they believe. Some atheists don't help the problem either, they call religion fake and call the believers stupid. Religion is a choice and everyone should respect that. Thing is, most don't. I'm a Christian, but I'm not going to EVER call anyone wrong or hate them because of what they believe. I think everyone needs to stop hating other people because of what they believe. It's a personal choice to hate on people for what they believe, so it can be stopped, but they don't want to because their "right".

I don't know really I suppose it is because Religion is something that we all have in common, if we have one if we do not have one - it's the biggest thing on the world it is something that people have different opinions on and that leads to fights, wars etc etc.

The world would be a better place if we all were allowed to believe what we wanted and not have to answer for it. To tolerate would be better but us humans can never get on.

Paul had the same delema that the world is in today....he pleaded with his brothers and sisters in Christ that they all think the same...so that no strife was to be found among them...but his pleas fell on deaf ears.....there are so many denominations that say there right and the other one is wrong....but how can we know for certain which Church is the Church that Jesus would attend ? I hope this video clears things up a bit.....

    God does answer prayers.

    Note:

God does not put on "magic shows" or jump when people that appose him demand Him to.No leader of this world would. Why do those that want to silence (especially christians) think God will bow and obey them.

    Please Read about:

    Stalin

    Lenin

    Castro

    Pol pot

    Mao

    etc.

You can believe what you want.Other people may not choose and certainly don't want to be forced to believe what you do (courts and governments rulings and mandates).

Well, people like feeling like they're right, and they want to be right about the big questions of the universe.

    Then they get petty.
