Layover in Frankfurt: Can I leave the airport?

I'm flying to New York from Singapore (originally from Australia) on the 16th January 2012. There is a 2 hour layover in Frankfurt for refuelling etc. I've never been to Europe before and I'd really like to go through customs and leave the airport briefly if possible. Are people allowed to leave frankfurt airport during flight layovers, or are they confined to departure lounges?

Update:

I don't have any intentions of going into the city. I just want to be able to say I stepped outside of the airport. In essence, I'd be going back in just after I came out.

As cool as it would have been to say I technically have been to Germany, you need more than 2 hours. I would assume (from the route described) you are flying Singapore Airlines and I think they make you wait in the aircraft if you're final destination is not frankfurt. Even if they let you out, you wouldn't have enough time to clear customs and go back in. I wouldn't do that unless I had at least 5-6 hours. And yes, an Australian citizen would have no problems entering Germany.

    Frankfurt Airport Layover

The minimum amount of time after which you are allowed to leave an airport in transit is 6-8 hours depending on the country. You may be able to take a later flight by contacting the agent/company who booked it for you but you will likely have to pay a charge for this change depending on the airline. This charge varies from 0-500 GBP depending on the original price of the ticket.

Stopovers are generally free as the airline has to stop there anyway. It would be a shame to miss out Europe completely so I'd contact your agent/company in the first instance.

if you have the documentation to enter Europe, you could do this, but 2 hours is about a comfortable cushion of time to change planes, absolutely not enough to go anywhere. You might have time to go get some hot wings from the Hooters before lining up for security again. "step outside the airport? It's a big airport! If you're inside security, you're still in Europe.

If you're Australian then you don't need a visa and can clear immigration and customs and step outside the airport. Considering the time it may take to clear immigration and customs as well as security when you go back into the airport, it may not be worth the trouble. You probably will have enough time if want to though.
