Carrying money across a border?

I am college student and traveling with my father to Europe for visit.

As US citizens, are we allowed to bring $9000 back, each, to US without declaring it, coming on the same flight? I understand that a family traveling together can carry up to $10000 without declaring , but since I am over 18 do I count as 'family' separately from my father?

The limit is actually USD $10,000 in cash or the equivalent. Above that amount, you _must_ declare it. Failure to declare it can mean the loss of ALL of that money AND additional fines and jail time.

This is the form that needs to be filled out:

    http://www.fincen.gov/forms/files/fin105_cmir.pdf

It does not mention "family" vs. "person". I <<think>> that you would be separate from any one else with whom you are traveling. But - - - That is only my opinion, and does not have any legal experience to support it.

If you have any concerns at all, fill out the form and declare the total. There is NO LAW that says you cannot carry more than 10K; the government simply want to know.
