Is there a boxing play-by-play announcer worse than Jim Lampley?
I'm watching the HBO best of 2011 series, and I'm amazed that someone who has seen as many top fights as this guy can be so consistently wrong. Any time there's an exchange, Lampley is calling the wrong person as connecting with significant shots. During Paquiao/Marquez III, he does the same, and in the sixth round, in a non-exchange moment, Paquiao fires a punch that Marquez catches on his glove and bats away three inches, at least, in front of his face, while Lampley screams about Paquiao landing a great powerful shot.
I remember back in the early 80s watching Hagler/Hearns, and listening to Lampley screaming about Hagler being hurt and in deep trouble as Hearns is staggering off to the side with Hagler closing in on him.
The guy hasn't gotten better with an additional quarter century plus of watching the best fights. I think someone tasked with the play-by-play should be able to call what's going on with at least a very small degree of accuracy.
Is there anyone worse? Or do you think he's okay?
You seem to have a reading comprehension problem. I'm not pointing to some obscure reference from the 80s to support my contention. I'm pointing out that, hundreds of championship fights later, with all that additional experience and expertise under his belt, he still sucks just as bad as then.
Most of my examples are from this year. If it was the heat of the moment, you'd expect he'd get it right about half the time, like a blind person would by randomly picking, instead of getting it exactly wrong most of the time.

I don't like Lampley, but there's not a lot of other options out there. Actually, most of that crew could be put out to pasture.
Maybe they should give Kellerman the reigns. He and Emanuel Stewart, without the rest of them, would be much better.

If you have to go all the way back to the 80s to support your argument, then I think you should give old Jim a break. The action in boxing is pretty hectic most of the time and it can be very difficult to call the action accurately consistently. I think Jim is the consummate professional and does a great job of bringing forward the inside knowledge of Emmanuel Stewart and grooming the very smart but very green Maxx Kellerman. Now if HBO would just get rid of Harold Lederman and Larry Merchant....
