Can you bake already prepared mashed potatoes?

I have an idea of a vegetable casserole of sorts I want to throw in the oven. Question though is I'm thinking of adding mashed potatoes into it. Will it have to remain unbaked, or can I put mashed potatoes into it and in fact bake them in the oven without them coming out weird? I've made all kinds of different potatoes before but I've never tried putting instant mashed potatoes into the oven.

Shepard's pie is a meat-based casserole with mashed potatoes layered on top then baked. So, yes you can make your casserole with mashed potatoes on top.

But I would suggest using freshly mashed potatoes instead of instant.

Toss in some grated cheese to give them a better flavor. Cheddar, parmesan or aged swiss would be good because they actually hold their flavor when baked. You might want to stir in a bit of melted butter and some milk or cream to be able to spread it better.

As far as how you are going to use these potatoes, you can spread them on top of your veggies and bake them. If you stir the potatoes into the dish it may be a bit weird in texture - better to just make it into soup if you want to blend in potato and not bake it on top.

Mashed potatoes made from scratch are so much better than instant and they are so easy to make, and cheaper, I might add. Potatoes from scratch are also so much better for you, like anything else. Stuff out of boxes is so processed - your body will thank you and so will your guests.

use your mashed potatoes as a topping

    to your casserole

i would add a little butter on top of the potatoes

when the potatoes start getting brown

    they are done

  • Yes you can bake already prepared mashed potatoes. They can be a topping or a bottom. Also they can be by themselves as duchess potatoes.

You can put them on top after the casserole is half done. If you mix them in it will be fine, they will make the casserole have a thickened consistency like gravy...
