Why is it considered "bad luck" to let a rocking chair rock while no one is sitting in it?

And where did this superstition originate?

    Ive never heard of that one, there is all kinds of superstition beliefs, my grandmother is very superstitious, me not so much... some of the superstitions I do believe, like not to break mirrors, lol.

    because it allows ghosts to possess the chair
