Hoe to make my spaghetti sauce more flavorful?
I'm making homemade spaghetti sauce and last time I made it, my parents said it was a little bland. I'm still new to cooking and don't quite know how to adjust spices, or improve flavors in existing recipes.
The recipe calls for:
1 medium onion
(1/4) tsp of garlic powder
1 small green pepper
1 tbsp olive oil
1 (8 oz) can diced tomatoes (I'm using one with garlic and onion seasoning)
1 (8 oz) can of tomato sauce
1 tsp of dried basil leaves
(1/2) tsp of dried oregano
(1/4) tsp salt
(1/8) tsp pepper
What could I add or increase to make the sauce more flavorful?

Some fresh, minced garlic. Maybe up the oregano to 1 tsp. Add 1/2 tsp. thyme. Maybe a little Tabasco if you're feeling adventurous or some smoke flavoring (just a little!)

My basic marinara uses 2-3 cloves garlic, olive oil, 2 tbs tomato paste, 1 can san marzano tomatoes and about 20 basil leaves.
If I want to spice it up (like for a puttanesca), I add 2 anchovies in salt, some black and green olives and some red pepper flakes.
If I want to use it for a pizza, I just add a bit of red pepper

While sauteing onions and green peppers add a pinch of hot pepper flakes, also adding fresh chopped garlic will boost flavors. The last 5 minutes of simmering add chopped green or kalamata olives and a dab of butter.

I make a lot of sauce in the fall to can. My recipe calls for real garlic, celery, and lemon juice. the juice is for keeping it acidic while canning, but it does, add a bit more zesty flavor to the sauce.
Do you cook it with meat? If you do, a 1/2 lb. of cooked sausage would add a bit extra flavor to it.
Good luck to you!

Add some more spices.
Add some fresh chili peppers or red chili flakes
Add a carrot when simmering in the pot.
Add some red wine when simmering to enhance the flavours of the spices.
Add some Parmesan cheese to enhance wine and spice flavours.

Well for start I would use real garlic. 2 cloves should do. Also tomatoe purée is a good ingredient.

real garlic a red chilli -- even a little bit a splash of worcester sauce helps too
