Got a chorus, how do I write the verse?

I already have some ideas for the lyrics. What I need is chords. Are there any general rules of thumb on how to go about creating music for a verse to go with your chorus? Its a kind of upbeat almost country love song. The chorus is simple, just C, G, C, G, D - repeat.

To fit the standard model, should I just make my verse from the same chords in the same order, but quiet it down a little? What's the trick?

obviously you want to keep it in the same key, so stick with the same chords. but that doesn't mean you have to play them in the same order or all of them. You can also throw some minors in there, Am, Em, Bm, and if you're going for some old school twang don't be afraid to replace a chord with a G7, D7 or C7--just don't overdo it.

It's not set in stone but I prefer to end the verse on a different chord than the chorus starts and likewise end the chorus on a different chord than the verse starts so there is some buildup. But most importantly make sure the melody that goes over each resolves itself so that it will make the transition from verse to chorus, chorus to verse smoothly.

If you know the melody of the verse sing it and try the different chords over it if you haven't developed the ear yet. If that is too hard then play the melody on the guitar so you can see which notes are actually in the chord you're playing so you can avoid unnecessary dissonance.
