Zoom doesn't apply to DSLRs. The 18-55 (not 18X55) is fine for portraits and landscapes. For now, just get the 18-55 and use it for a few months. After a few months, you'll have figured out if 1) you want a wider lens - 10-22) 2) you want a lens with more reach - 55-250. When lens shopping, avoid the 75-300 - they're junk

Simply put, multiply 18 x 1.5 which is 27 and 55x1.5 which is 82.5. These are the equivilent mm dimensions for a digital lens as opposed to film.

Zoom is just the ratio between the longest and shortest focal lengths of the zoom lens. 55 divided by 18 equals 3. That would be the answer, 3X zoom. How far can it focus? Up to infinity just like almost all of the dSLR lenses out there. How large will the magnification be? Hard to tell. Check this site.

When you enter the dSLR world, zoom means nothing. Learn focal length. Sunrise and sunset in landscapes is best taken with a wide angle lens like at 18mm on the 18-55mm kit zoom lens. To learn how to "look at" lenses, see this.
