I have been diagnosed with complicated migraines?

They at first thought I was having a stroke because the right side of my body would get numb and my speech is slow and slurred. All tests were negative and they say it is complicated migraines. Sometimes though, my head doesn't even hurt. Now, every night I wake up at some point with the numbness and slurred speech. The medicine that they gave me helps some but not enough.

Has anyone had anything similar and what helped?

My mom's migraines are so bad they border on stroke. Her right side goes numb, she can't see, speak or even function, really. She has to lay down and have complete silence and darkness. She vomits and is sometimes hospitalized. Hers are caused by stress, so her neurologist put her on Topamax twice a day. Topamax is an anti-anxiety medicine, and she has been on it for over a year and hasn't gotten a migraine since.
